1) Visit Archeological Sites
Deep in the jungles and lowlands of Central America the ancient Maya civilization stretched from the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico west to Guatemala and south to Honduras and El Salvador. At the center was what is now Belize. The iconic features of this period are the massive stone pyramids built within sprawling city-states. Belize boasts over 33 ancient Maya sites of Belize.
The Maya archeological sites are architectural wonders and feats of engineering. Some of the most impressive sites to visit are Xunantunich, Lamanai, Altun Ha, Caracol and Cahal Pech. Learn about Maya history while having a hands-on experience as you climb to the top of these pyramids to enjoy spectacular views. If you are a big history buff, consider visiting some of the lesser known sites such as Nim Li Punit, featuring the largest stela found or Lubaantun, where you can explore with without crowds.
2) Go Caving
Belize has a spectacular karst landscape of limestone caves and incredible geological features. With numerous sites throughout the country you have choices as to the type of experience you are after, from dry caves ideal for spelunking to wet caves through which you can float. While on these exciting adventures, learn about the important role caves played in Maya spirituality. Your guide will share with you folklore and mythology with intriguing characters, central messages, morals and anecdotes. In many of these caves you may even encounter artifacts from the ancient Maya civilization.
A few must see caves in Belize are the Actun Tunichil Mucknal (commonly known as the ATM), St. Herman’s Cave and Nohoch Che’en Cave Tubing.
3) Medicinal Plant Walk
The modern Maya have generational knowledge of the flora and fauna of Belize that is unsurpassed. A few hours in the broadleaf rainforest with an expert will feel as though you are just scratching the surface to a wealth of information. Learn about plants that have incredible medicinal qualities and are used to treat a range of ailments. 4) Learn to Make Chocolate
Have you ever wanted to make chocolate from scratch? The Che’il Maya Chocolate Tour is an immersive experience at a small traditional cocoa operation where you will learn how cocoa was used traditionally and in modern, small scale production.
During this experience discover the process of making a chocolate from the fruit tree to the chocolate bar. First, you will explore the farm, see the cacao trees and taste the fresh fruit – which is unlike what you may imagine it to taste like! Then, get hands-on experience making chocolate using traditional tools and methods. The best part is savoring the delicious Maya chocolate that you just made.
5) Music, Dance & Food
Music and dance plays an important part in the Maya culture. A sacred dance is the Deer Dance with men wearing elaborate costumes and masks. The marimba and Maya harp are traditional instruments. Corn is at the center of the Maya diet, along with beans, squash, plantains and peppers. Since the Maya grow much of their own food, they have delicious dishes including tamales, Caldo de pollo, relleno negro and pibil. Many of these are served at Hamanasi’s restaurant.
6) Arts & Crafts
Like their ancestors, today’s Maya create beautiful arts and crafts. Baskets made of Jippi Jappa leaves found abundantly in the rainforest are woven in assorted styles and sizes. Jewelry is made from beads and seeds. Many pottery vessels and slate carvings have Maya themes. Continuing ancient traditions, Maya women embroider fabric with floral and rainforest designs and weave colorful runners, purses and bags. Many of these traditional arts and crafts are for sale, supporting local Maya communities.
