Do you enjoy the adrenaline rush of trying something thrilling for the first time or find excitement by being submerged in the wild and natural beauty of the tropics?  If you are an adventurous traveler, these extreme adventures in Belize might just be what you have been looking for.

Black Hole Drop

Experience an electrifying rush like no other when you rappel down into a 300 ft sinkhole in Belize! This expedition starts off with a 1.5 mile vigorous hike along a very steep and often slippery trail into the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The edge of the Actun Loch Tunich, locally known as the “mother of all caves”, sits 300 feet above the basin floor. Feel the excitement build as the fully trained caving guides safely rig up a system of rappelling ropes for your descent into the basin below.

You’ll never forget the feeling of approaching the edge of the sinkhole and trusting yourself as you lower off of the edge!  The first 200 feet provides an unforgettable experience and sights to behold as you admire the rainforest canopy below and freely rappel into the sinkhole.  Be sure to take your time to enjoy the views — they are stunning!  The last 100 feet takes you down through the rainforest canopy.  Once at the bottom, you will explore the inside of the sinkhole before you trek back.

Waterfall Rappel

For a cool and refreshing adventure, consider an invigorating waterfall rappel! With several options between Mayflower Bocawina National Park to Angel Falls, your concierge at Hamanasi’s Adventure Center will help you pick the perfect experience. At either destination, upon arrival you will be safely geared up and begin about an hour-long strenuous hike through the rainforest to the top of the falls. Once at the top you’ll cool off in the crystal clear water as the team sets up the ropes and gear.

Take a leap of faith as you rappel down the face of a waterfall navigating the wet and slick rocks. There are two stages to the rappel, the first being the wettest and the most exhilirating, and a second stage which is slightly easier.  Knowledgeable guides are there to help with your descent, ensuring fun and safety.

Zipline

Have you ever wanted to see the rainforest from a bird’s eye view while feeling the breeze in your hair? If you thought yes, then the Ziplining experience may be for you!  With two options between the Mayflower Bocawina National Park and Angel Falls along the Hummingbird highway, you will be able to find the perfect experience. Your concierge at Hamanasi’s Adventure Center will help you decide between a thrilling 8 zip and 2 rappel adventure through the canopies of Mayflower Bocawina National Park or the fastest, longest and tallest zipline in Belize with Angel Falls Xtreme Adventures.

Ziplining through the rainforest canopy.

Both tours begin with kitting up, followed by a short hike to the initial zip line. After a safety briefing you get your first taste of zipping with a short line, also known as the “chicken run”, to get you used to the equipment. If you don’t “chicken out” you will get to fly through the canopy on various lengths of zip lines, some are fast while others are VERY fast!

The ATM Cave

With Belize’s limestone foundations, there are many opportunities to being underground, including Hamanasi’s Cave & Jungle Adventure and Cave Tubing.  For an Indiana Jones experience try the wonders of Actun Tunichil Muknal, also known as the ATM Cave. Travel back in time following pathways used by the Maya and discover lost treasures that have been hidden deep within the jungle for centuries. This excursion unveils the mysteries and secrets of the Maya underworld.

A good level of physical fitness is required for this awesome, challenging adventure.  You can expect to hike over one mile into the jungle including fording a shallow river and swimming a short distance across a pool of water to gain entrance into the cave. Once inside, you will be in and out of the water while navigating a technical hike atop rocks and boulders using only the light from your headlamp and flashlight. Arriving at the ceremonial chambers will certainly be worth it, but you will need to hike in your socks to protect the integrity of the sights you are about to behold. See burial chambers with calcified sacrificial remains, ceremonial vessels and other cultural artifacts left by the Maya centuries ago. Remember, to get out, all this must be done in the reverse. This certainly is not Disneyland, but the real deal!
