Travel to Belize any time of the year is fantastic. The country boasts the second largest barrier reef in the world. It was at the center of ancient Maya civilization. Belize has rainforests, caves, waterfalls and the world’s first Jaguar Preserve. And let’s not forget the amazing people and their many cultures!
But August is a special time of year to visit Belize. Here are 10 reasons to squeeze in an end of summer vacation in Belize:
1) Fewer people
Many families are sending their kids back to school or are already gearing up for football season. The winter snowbirds have long gone back home. That means there are fewer people at Maya sites, national parks and even on the reef. You will be able to enjoy Belize without the crowds.
2) Easier on the Pocketbook
Hotels and airfare tend to be more reasonable in August. It is likely that you’ll have a bit more space on the plane – always a bonus. There are many direct flights to Belize making travel that much easier, but please be sure to offset your carbon footprint. With these savings you will be able to spend more on cocktails and souvenirs!
3) Emancipation Day
August 1 marks the day in 1834 that the cruel system of slavery ended across the British Empire. That’s reason enough to celebrate.
4) Fill up on Lobster
Lobster catch is regulated in Belize to ensure robust population levels. However, in July and August, mature crustaceans may be harvested. You will be able to savor delicious fresh lobster dishes. Yum!
5) Celebrate the Indigenous Maya
August 9th is World Indigenous Peoples Day. In Belize, you can celebrate the cultures, traditions and foods of the Maya and learn about their fascinating ancient civilization. Check out Hamanasi Resort in Hopkins, Stann Creek, which has festivities annually in August led by Maya employees.
6) Lush & Beautiful
The weather in August tends to be in the low 80s along the coast with cooling trade winds. Inland it can get quite a bit warmer. Typically, there is a reprieve from heavy tropical rains in August, known as the “mauger” or “little dry season”. Plants and trees are verdant and lush.
7) Calm Seas
Historically, Belize’s corner of Caribbean Sea tends to be calmer in August, making trips out to the reef and atolls much smoother. Of course, weather can be unpredictable and a hurricane could pop up. Buy your travel insurance!
8) Spot Wildlife
August is the best time to view manatees. Witness turtles hatching along the coast and islands. With the green season, the rainforest and wildlife comes to life. You’ll have a good chance of spotting monkeys in the fruiting trees.
9) Deer Dance Festival
The southern Toledo District is home to many Maya, and San Antonio village is the largest Maya settlement in Belize. Typically in August is the Deer Dance festival that includes music, dancing, costume, a greasy pole and burning incense. It is an amazing sensory experience.
10) Go birding
Belize boasts nearly 600 species of birds. Throughout the country’s many parks, like the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, you can spot a variety of birds like toucans, humming birds and parrots. Along the sea and coastal marshes, you will find wading birds such as jabiru storks, roseate spoonbills and pelicans. Grab your binoculars and add to your life list before the fall migration begins!
So what are you waiting for? Plan your August vacation in Belize now!
