Hamanasi Adventure & Dive Resort, Belize
The Best of Belize, On & Offshore
"The Mother of all Caves"... Actun Loch Tunich! This expedition starts off with a 1.5 mile vigorous hike along a very steep and often slippery trail into the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The edge of the Actun Loch Tunich sinkhole sits 300 feet above the basin below and 200 feet above the rainforest canopy that grows out from the sinkhole basin. When you reach the sinkhole, fully trained caving guides safely rig a system of rappelling ropes for your decent into the basin below.
You'll experience an adrenaline rush as you repel the first 10 feet off the rocky face. The next 200 feet provides an unforgettable experience and sights to behold. Be sure to take your time to enjoy the views -- they are stunning! The last 100 feet takes you down through the rainforest canopy. Once at the bottom, you will explore the inside of the sinkhole before you trek back.
Nearby are the unexcavated remains of the ancient Mayan city of Mayflower. Archaeologists are still unearthing and piecing together the history of this modest Mayan ruin, which is overgrown by the jungle. Orchids, birds and lush vegetation abound! This hike is physically challenging!

Just keep doing what you’re doing… The Mayan tour history was incredible; the guide was extremely knowledgeable and profoundly connected to his heritage.
Everything is so close – the mountains, caves, waterfalls, animals, ruins – this is such a peaceful country with rich culture and a people that cares about the environment. What a hidden gem! Thank you!
