Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave Tour

Travel back in time following pathways used by the Maya and discover lost treasures that have been hidden deep within the jungle for centuries. This excursion unveils the mysteries and secrets of the Maya underworld. Witness spectacular views of the jungle, while fording rivers and trekking remote jungle trails. See burial chambers with calcified remains, ceremonial vessels and other cultural artifacts left by the Maya centuries ago.

Artifacts often are looted from caves following their discovery. Because of this, passage through this cave is known to only a few select guides who have permission from the Belize Department of Archeology to take visitors to this special cave. To this day, the ATM cave has not been looted and nearly all of the cultural artifacts have remained in place as they were originally found in 1989.   Please note that while this is an AWESOME adventure it also is a challenging one -- a good level of physical fitness required! You will hike over one mile into the jungle including fording a shallow river. You will need to swim a short distance across a pool of water to get into the cave. (Life jackets provided upon request.) Hiking inside the cave is sometimes through water and always on and over rocks and boulders. Once inside the ceremonial chambers, you will need to hike in your socks. All this is done with the only light being from headlamps and flashlights. Remember, to get out, all this must be done in the reverse! This certainly is not Disneyland, but the real deal!

Nearby are the unexcavated remains of the ancient Mayan city of Mayflower. Archaeologists are still unearthing and piecing together the history of this modest Mayan ruin, which is overgrown by the jungle. Orchids, birds and lush vegetation abound!  This hike is physically challenging!
